Technical Specs:

  • Connectors: aeco 4-pin XLR Series (AX4-1611R)
  • Cable: ALO Audio Reference 16 (Vintage)
  • Equipment: Sennheiser HD800S

My Experience

The vintage ALO Audio Reference 16 is one of the best HD800S cables ever made, and re-terminating it from the original 6.3mm plug required a high-quality plug that is reliable, easy to work with, and good-sounding, and the AX4 series ended up being ideal.

My Setup & Workflow

The main issue with re-termination was setting up the wires in the right position for the contacts, especially since they had been in a different position for a 6.3mm plug, and the signal returns had to be re-done with multiple strands for each.

One of the challenges is requiring a lot of heat, while at the same time not melting either the insulation or the plug but having enough that a lot of solder can be applied quickly, which is why I like plugs that use Teflon.

💬 Maker's Quote

The original headphones I had the cable on were the original HD800. Re-terminating it required a high-quality plug—one of the challenges is requiring a lot of heat while at the same time not melting the insulation or the plug, which is why I like plugs that use Teflon.
